They originated from the Watts Varrio Grape (WVG), an Hispanic street gang. which was a combination of Mexicans as well as Blacks. However, by the 1970s, the Latinos members at some point aligned themselves with the Mexican Mafia Sereno brand. This situation led to them altering their name to South Side Varrio Grape and attaching the number 13 (South Side Watts Varrio Grape 13).
