Bloody Mary
Rajni Faulks (July 21, 1970 – November 19, 2006), best known by her stage names Bloody Mary and Nini X, was an American rapper whose deep vocal delivery and gangsta rap style earned widespread recognition in the early 1990s. She is notable for being the only female member of the Bloods & Crips rap collective and for her contributions to West Coast gangsta rap through releases on Dangerous Records.
Born in Steubenville, Ohio, Faulks later relocated to Compton, California. While in Compton, she became affiliated with the Avenue Piru Gang and maintained associations with the East Side Fruit Town Pirus. Her gang ties were reflected in her lyrics and contributed to the street authenticity that defined her musical persona.
Music Career
Bloody Mary gained national attention after joining the Bloods & Crips rap project under Dangerous Records. She appeared prominently on the breakout single “Piru Love,” featured on the 1993 gangsta rap compilation Bangin’ on Wax. The track became one of the most recognizable songs from the Bloods & Crips era and showcased her deep, commanding vocal style alongside fellow rappers.
Following the success of Bloods & Crips, Bloody Mary released her solo debut album, She’s Dangerous, in 1994 under the name Nini X. She later released Day of Resurrection in 2003, a compilation project that combined solo material with Bloods & Crips recordings. During the mid-1990s, she was associated with Death Row Records and worked alongside artists connected to the label, though she was not formally signed.
Her vocal tone was frequently mistaken for that of a male rapper, a trait that became a defining characteristic and helped distinguish her within a male-dominated genre.
Feud with Luke
During the mid-1990s, Bloody Mary became involved in a public feud with Miami-based rapper Luther Campbell, commonly known as Luke. The dispute arose following Campbell’s song “Cowards in Compton,” which criticized the city of Compton and its street culture. Bloody Mary responded with a diss track titled “Fuck Luke,” recorded alongside members of the Bloods & Crips rap collective. The exchange drew attention within hip-hop media at the time and further established Bloody Mary’s reputation for direct, confrontational lyricism within West Coast gangsta rap.
Death
On November 19, 2006, Bloody Mary was critically injured in Compton, California, when her motorcycle was struck by a fleeing vehicle during a high-speed police chase. She was placed on life support but later died from her injuries. Her death at the age of 36 marked the loss of one of the most distinctive voices associated with West Coast gangsta rap.
Legacy
Bloody Mary remains an influential figure in gangsta rap history, recognized for her groundbreaking role as a female voice in gang-affiliated hip-hop and for her performances on seminal tracks such as “Piru Love.” Her work with Bloods & Crips and her solo releases continue to be referenced by fans of 1990s West Coast rap.
