From January 10th, 2014:

On December 13 we received a video from a resident who witnessed and video taped a brutal beating on Horizon and Ocean Front Walk. We wrote the story and shortly the beating became worldwide news. LAPD was given copies, and we were quickly told the suspects were known to officers, were identified by LAPD from the video and a felony warrant was put out for their arrest.

Sunday the suspect, Apolinar Lopez was speeding through Venice, was pulled over and arrested for DUI and for his outstanding felony warrant for the beating. Apolinar had several arrests last year and spent time in jail as recently as Oct and Nov of 2013. As for the man being homeless… he is “Venice” homeless and the beating was apparently the normal form of street justice that happens on the boardwalk every day. Needless to say the victim is well known to officers also.
