The 57 Neighborhood Crips (57NHC), also known as the Five-Seven Neighborhood Crips, are an African-American street gang located on the West Side of South Los Angeles, California. The 57 Neighborhood Crips are a subset of the larger Neighborhood Crips (NHC) alliance and are part of the Rollin’ 50s Neighborhood Crips, which includes the 55, 57, and 58 Neighborhood Crips.
Early History
The gang originated as a local “get-money” crew known as the 57 Hustlers before adopting a Crip identity in the early 1990s to counter the Hoover Criminals’ influence. Its territory is centered on the Westside of South LA, primarily focused along 57th Street between Normandie Avenue and Vermont Avenue, just west of the 110 freeway. To resist the Hoover Criminals, 57th Street looked to their neighbors. The 55 Neighborhood Crips had already transitioned to the “NH” (Neighborhood) card. To create a stronger front, 57th Street followed suit, officially adopting the Neighborhood Crip identity.
Cultural Associations
The 57 Neighborhood Crip territory has gained significant pop-culture recognition as a primary filming location for the FX television series Snowfall. The house used for the protagonist, Franklin Saint, was the actual residence of an original neighborhood member named Augie. Additionally, the set has been featured in various street documentaries and interviews by platforms such as StreetTV, documenting the oral history of the “Rollin’ 50s” alliance.
Allies and Rivalries
The 57 Neighborhood Crips are core members of the Rollin’ 50s alliance (also known as the Nifty 50s), a tight-knit coalition consisting of the 55 Neighborhood Crips and 58 Neighborhood Crips. They maintain a strong ideological and strategic alliance with the Rollin’ 60s Neighborhood Crips and other sets under the Neighborhood Crip (2x) card. Historically, they also shared a close bond with the 56 Syndicate Crips, an older generation set from the same area.
The gang’s primary rivals are the Hoover Criminals, particularly the 52 Hoover Gangster Crips and 54 Hoover Criminals, along with the Eight Tray Gangster Crips (ETGC). The feud with the Eight Trays goes back to the long-running divide between the Gangster Crips (3x) and Neighborhood Crips (2x).
Other rivals include the Van Ness Gangster Brims (VNG), Harvard Park Brims, and the 51 Trouble Gangster Crips. The 51 Trouble Gangster Crips were once friendly with the gang before aligning themselves with the Hoover Criminals.
