USA – Crime – The East Side Longos

1988, Long Beach, California, USA — The East Side Longos form a large Mexican-American gang rooted in the Hispanic community along Anaheim Street in Long Beach, Calif., and are main rivals with African-American and Asian gangs. The East Side Longos are the dominantly larger of the three gangs, with a number of small neighborhood “cliques” making up their membership. The “Malditos,” one of several cliques or sets of the ESL, “jump in” a new recruit, who has to prove his courage in a timed fight with a veterano gang member. They were photographed in 1988. — Image by © Axel Koester/Corbis
