As the summer comes to an end, student’s prepare for school. However, students of the Compton Unified School District, were surprised to discover that school police officers are allowed to carry semi-automatic AR-15’s, while patrolling school premises in Compton, California. The policy, approved by the Compton Unified Board of Education and was confirmed by District spokesman Ron Suazo.
Local residents of Compton and community leaders were outraged, including the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). The officers will keep the assault rifles in the trunks of their cars, unless they are needed, according to the Compton Police chief of the Unified School District.
A statement made by Compton School Police Chief William Wu, “Our objective is quite simple — we want to save lives,” Wu said. “These rifles give us greater flexibility in dealing with a person with bad intent who comes onto any of our campuses the goal — as always — is ensuring safety and, as a department and as a school district, we are committed to achieving that goal.”
on December 14, 2012, in Newton, Connecticut 20-year-old Adam Lanza, equipped with a M4 Type Carbine, which falls under the AR-15 platform. Entered an Elementary School (Sandy Hook), shot and killed 26 people, which consisted of 20 students and 6 adults. Prior to the shooting, Lanza shot and killed his mother at their home, before driving to the Elementary School and shattering innocent lives.
By the time police arrived on the scene, Adam Lanza had already committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. This brutal massacre, touched the hearts of millions across the nation including Barack OBama, the president of the United States.
On July 20, 2012, thousands of moviegoers and fans attended the premiere of Batman (The Dark Knight Rises), a movie by Warner Bros. In Aurora, Colorado, a lone gunmen wearing a gas mask, armed with an “AR-15” opened fire inside the Century 16 movie theater, killing 12 people and injuring 56 others. James Eagan Holmes, was arrested for the shooting, and faces multiple charges such as 24 counts of first degree murder and 116 counts of attempted murder.
In 1996, the AR-15 was one of the primary weapon used by Martin Bryant, who went on a killing spree, murdering 35 people and wounding 23 in Port Arthur, Australia. The tragic shooting, was dubbed as the “Port Arthur Massacre” and remains one of the most horrific massacres in the 20th century. Martin Bryant was charged with 35 life sentences 1,035 years in a psychiatric ward without the possibility of parole.
