The Hacienda Village Bloods (HVB), also known as the East Side Hacienda Village Bloods, are a long-standing African-American street gang based in the Hacienda Village Housing Projects, now known as Gonzaque Village, in the Watts neighborhood of South Los Angeles, California.

The Hacienda Village Bloods and the Bounty Hunter Bloods are the only two Blood gangs in Watts based inside a public housing project.

History And Early Origins

The Hacienda Village Bloods formed during the 1970s inside the Hacienda Village Housing Projects, a public housing development completed in 1942.

In 1992, the Hacienda Village Bloods were one of the four Watts gangs that signed the historic Watts Truce with the Bounty Hunter Bloods, Grape Street Watts Crips, and PJ Watts Crips. The agreement helped reduce gang-related violence throughout Watts during much of the 1990s.

In 2000, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles renamed the housing development Gonzaque Village in honor of Ozie B. Gonzaque, although residents, law enforcement, and local media continue to refer to the neighborhood as Hacienda Village.

Territory & Cliques

The Hacienda Village Bloods claim the Hacienda Village Housing Projects and the surrounding neighborhood along Compton Avenue between 103rd Street and 107th Street. 106th Street serves as the boundary between the Hacienda Village Bloods and the neighboring Watts Village Boys 13.

The street has been the site of repeated gang-related shootings and retaliatory attacks between the two gangs. The gang is organized around several neighborhood-based cliques, including 104th Street, 105th Street, 106th Street, and 107th Street.

Documented Incidents

The Grape Street Basketball Court Shooting (2006)

On January 9, 2006, members of the rival Grape Street Watts Crips entered the Hacienda Village Housing Projects in a stolen vehicle. Anthony Lynch exited carrying a semi-automatic rifle and ran toward the basketball courts near 104th Street and Compton Avenue, where he fired between 15 and 20 rounds.

The gunfire killed Rayfton Morrison, a 41-year-old resident, and became one of the most significant shootings involving the Hacienda Village Bloods during the 2000s.

The Gonzaque Village Retaliation Shootings (2013)

In April 2013, a series of retaliatory shootings broke out between members of the Hacienda Village Bloods and Watts Village Boys 13. According to police, one gang member was shot in the head, and the following day, a rival was shot in the neck.

The back-to-back shootings prompted an increased LAPD presence inside the neighborhood and highlighted the continuing conflict along the 106th Street boundary.

The 106th Street Border Killing (2017)

On January 13, 2017, Alonzo Devon Melson, known as “Yank,” confronted three men sitting inside a parked vehicle along 106th Street, the boundary between Hacienda Village Bloods and Watts Village Boys 13 territory. After asking where they were from, Melson opened fire, killing Samuel Navarrete and wounding two others.

Melson was convicted of murder and attempted murder before receiving a sentence of 150 years to life. In 2026, the California Court of Appeal vacated the conviction after determining that prosecutors failed to correct false testimony presented by key witnesses.

Allies & Rivals

The Hacienda Village Bloods maintain long-standing alliances with the Bounty Hunter Bloods and the Circle City Piru. The gang has also maintained an on-and-off relationship with the PJ Watts Crips, largely because of their shared rivalry with the Grape Street Watts Crips.

The Hacienda Village Bloods are also rivals of the Watts Mafia Crips, Bacc Street Watts Crips, Front Street Watts Crips, Fudge Town Mafia Crips, and the Watts Village Boys 13 (former allies).
