The Rollin’ 40s Neighborhood Crips (R40NHC), also known as Rollin 40s Crips, are an African-American street gang based in the Chollas View and Mount Hope communities of Southeast San Diego, California. They fall under the Rollin 0’s and Neighborhood Crips umbrella.

Origins On Market Street

The Rollin 40s Neighborhood Crips formed in the Chollas View neighborhood of Southeast San Diego during the early 1970s as one of the city’s first Crip neighborhoods. According to interviews with first-generation members, the neighborhood began after Donnie Ramsey, a member of the Rollin 30s Harlem Crips from Los Angeles, relocated to San Diego and introduced the Neighborhood Crips identity to youths around 47th Street and Market Street.

Initially centered around 47th Street and Market Street, the Rollin 40s expanded along 41st, 45th, and 47th Streets through Chollas View and the adjacent Mount Hope area. Gompers Park became one of the neighborhood’s best-known gathering places. As ties with Los Angeles Neighborhood Crips became established, the Rollin 40s adopted the Neighborhood Crips identity and joined the Rollin’ O’s alliance.

By the mid-1970s, early members recall a time when only a handful of Black street gangs operated in Southeast San Diego. The Rollin 40s maintained friendly relationships with nearby neighborhoods, including Varrio Market Street and 45 Samoa Crips.

Territory

The Rollin’ 40s claim portions of Chollas View and Mount Hope between Market Street and Hilltop Drive, stretching from 40th Street to 49th Street; these blocks are known as the 40s. Gompers Park has long served as one of the neighborhood’s traditional gathering places. The Rollin 40s share their territory with nearby neighborhoods, including Varrio Market Street and 45 Samoa Crips.

Culture and Media

Rapper James “Jayo Felony” Savage became one of the first artists from Southeast San Diego to sign with a major record label after joining Jam Master Jay Records in 1994 and later Def Jam Recordings. His recordings frequently referenced the Rollin’ 40s, Chollas View, and Southeast San Diego, bringing national recognition to the neighborhood.

Documented Incidents

1986: Larry “Bake Nuts” Baker

Rollin’ 40s member Larry “Bake Nuts” Baker was killed in 1986 in one of the earliest publicly documented incidents involving the neighborhood. His funeral drew family members, clergy, elected officials, and community leaders, who used the service to call for an end to gang violence in Southeast San Diego. Newspaper coverage focused on both Baker’s death and the community’s response, reflecting growing concern over gang-related violence during the 1980s.

April 30, 2011: Rapper Cutthroat Killed

Rollin’ 40s member and local rapper Nasheed “Cutthroat” Al’Uqdah was shot and killed near the intersection of 47th Street and Nogal Street after suffering multiple gunshot wounds. His death prompted peace rallies organized by neighborhood residents, clergy, musicians, and anti-violence organizations. Investigators treated the homicide as gang-related, although no arrests were publicly announced.

November 2011: Fight at YG Performance

A performance by rapper YG at a cafe club in downtown San Diego ended in violence after members of the West Coast Crips and Rollin’ 40s Neighborhood Crips began chanting “Rollin” inside the venue. The confrontation continued outside, where a large fight broke out before San Diego police dispersed the crowd. Video of the incident circulated online and was later cited in local news coverage.

2010s: Gang Enhancement Prosecutions

Beginning in the 2010s, Rollin’ 40s members appeared in numerous California appellate decisions involving homicide, attempted murder, firearm offenses, and gang enhancements. Court testimony from those cases describes the neighborhood’s territory, alliances, rivalries, identifying symbols, and criminal investigations, providing some of the most detailed public records concerning the Rollin’ 40s.

Allies & Rivals

The Rollin 40s Neighborhood Crips are allied with other Neighborhood Crip sets throughout Southeast San Diego. One of their most notable relationships is with the West Coast Crips. Although the two neighborhoods were longtime rivals during the 1980s and early 1990s, the conflict eventually subsided, and they developed a close alliance. Other close allies are West Coast Crips, East Dago Mob, 45 Samoa Crips, Vista Linda Rollin 60s Crips, and Varrio Maket Street.

The neighborhood’s oldest rivalry is with the Lincoln Park Bloods, whose territory borders Chollas View to the southeast. Other longtime rivals include Skyline Piru, O’Farrell Park Banksters, Parkside Piru, and the 5-9 Brims.
