The Altadena Blocc Crips (ABC) are a predominantly African-American Crip street gang based on the west side of Altadena, California. The gang is widely regarded as the first Crip gang established in Altadena and remains one of the largest gangs in the Pasadena-Altadena area.

The Altadena Blocc Crips identify with the Gangster Crips (3x) alliance and have maintained a presence in the community since the 1970s.

Early History

The origins of the Altadena Blocc Crips can be traced to the mid-1970s, when the group was known simply as the Altadena Crips. In 1979, members officially adopted the Altadena Blocc Crips name. The name change came as members developed closer ties with the Santana Blocc Compton Crips through family connections between the two neighborhoods.

By 1980 and 1981, the gang began identifying with the Gangster Crips (3x) alliance. According to original members, the Tray identity was adopted in part to separate the gang from the Deuce 2x gangs operating in nearby Pasadena. Older members have said the gang was Altadena Blocc first and Tray second.

By the 1980s, the Altadena Blocc Crips had become one of the largest gangs in the Pasadena-Altadena area. Unlike many Los Angeles neighborhoods where Crip gangs primarily fought one another, much of Altadena Blocc’s early conflicts involved Blood gangs operating in Pasadena and Altadena.

Territory

Altadena Blocc Crips territory is located in western Altadena and is centered around the Fair Oaks Avenue corridor. The neighborhood includes portions of Harriet Street, Palm Street, Pine Street, and nearby residential blocks between West Mountain View Street and West Loma Alta Drive.

Members have long been associated with Loma Alta Park, located near Lincoln Avenue and West Loma Alta Drive. The park has historically served as one of the gang’s most recognizable gathering places.

Other community landmarks include Farnsworth Park and Charles White Park, both of which played important roles in neighborhood life during the gang’s early years.

Culture

According to original members, life in Altadena during the late 1970s and 1980s revolved around much more than gang activity. Neighborhood gatherings often included pop-locking competitions, house parties, skating rinks, and weightlifting sessions in residential garages.

Many members attended the same schools as their rivals, particularly John Muir High School and Pasadena High School. As a result, conflicts between neighborhoods frequently carried over into school campuses and community events.

Lowrider culture was also present within the neighborhood, with several members owning customized vehicles during the 1980s. These activities reflected the broader street culture found throughout Los Angeles County during the era.

Documented Incidents

Pasadena–Altadena Gang War (1988–1989)

One of the most violent periods involving the Altadena Blocc Crips occurred during the late 1980s after the killing of an Altadena Blocc Crips member. According to investigators, the homicide sparked a series of retaliatory shootings between Crip and Blood gangs in Pasadena and Altadena. By mid-1989, authorities linked at least ten deaths to the ongoing conflict, making it one of the deadliest gang wars in the history of the Pasadena-Altadena area.

Ontario Funeral Shootout (2021)

In February 2021, a shootout erupted during a funeral gathering for a suspected Altadena Blocc Crips member in Ontario, California. Federal investigators alleged that the violence stemmed from a long-running feud involving members of the Altadena Blocc Crips, Du Roc Crips, and Pasadena Denver Lane Bloods. According to court documents, multiple participants exchanged gunfire, with rounds striking nearby homes and vehicles. The incident later resulted in federal firearms charges against several alleged gang members.

Allies & Rivals

The Altadena Blocc Crips maintain alliances with Santana Blocc Crips and several Gangster Crip sets, including the Du Roc Crips, Eight Tray Gangster Crips, Avalon Gangster Crips, and Broadway Gangster Crips.

Their primary rivals are the Pasadena Denver Lane Bloods (PDLB) and the Altadena Denver Lanes (ADL). The conflict between these gangs has lasted for decades and remains one of the most significant rivalries in the Pasadena-Altadena area.

The gang also maintains a longstanding alliance with the Squiggly Lane Gangster Bloods. Despite the traditional Blood-Crip divide, both groups share a common rivalry with the Pasadena Denver Lanes and their affiliates. Other rivals include the Project Gangster Bloods (PGB) and the Los Angeles Denver Lane Bloods.
