The Lueders Park Piru (LPP), also known as Lueders Park Bompton Piru, is a predominantly African-American Piru street gang located on the East Side of Compton, California. The gang is named after Lueders Park, located at 1500 East Rosecrans Avenue, which has served as the neighborhood’s historic gathering place for decades.

Lueders Park Piru is widely regarded as one of the oldest Piru neighborhoods on Compton’s East Side. Gang-history sources commonly identify the neighborhood as one of the original East Side Piru sets, with several later Piru gangs tracing their origins to Lueders Park. Historically, Lueders Park is considered the “motherland” of East Side Piru neighborhoods in Compton.

Early Origins

The origins of Lueders Park Piru can be traced back to the early 1970s during the formation of the Piru movement in Compton. Before the neighborhood became known as Lueders Park Piru, portions of the area were reportedly associated with the East Side Piru identity. As the Piru Street Boys expanded Piru throughout Compton, Lueders Park became one of the first established Piru neighborhoods on the East Side.

By the mid-1970s, the area surrounding Lueders Park had already developed a reputation as a gathering place for Piru members. Public reports from the period identified Piru activity around the park, confirming the neighborhood’s existence during the earliest years of Piru history.

During the early years of the Blood and Crip conflict, Lueders Park became one of the primary gathering locations for East Side Piru members. As Piru influence expanded throughout East Compton, younger members from surrounding blocks would eventually establish their own Piru neighborhoods, helping spread the East Side Piru identity throughout the area.

During the 1970s and early 1980s, Lueders Park Piru and Compton Varrio 70 reportedly maintained friendly relations before evolving into longtime rivals as tensions increased throughout East Compton.

Territory

Lueders Park Piru’s neighborhood is centered around Lueders Park and the surrounding residential streets on Compton’s East Side. Their territory generally extends from Rosecrans Avenue to Compton Blvd, between Bullis Road and Atlantic Avenue. Several landmarks are located within or near the neighborhood, including Lueders Park, Roosevelt Elementary School, Whaley Middle School, and Dominguez High School. Many documented incidents involving LPP members have occurred near Rosecrans Avenue, Bradfield Avenue, Bullis Road, Butler Avenue, and surrounding residential blocks.

East Side Piru Lineage

Lueders Park Piru is widely regarded as one of the foundational East Side Piru neighborhoods. According to gang-history sources and former members, several later East Side Piru gangs emerged from the broader Piru movement centered around Lueders Park. Neighborhoods commonly associated with this lineage include Mob Piru, Elm Street Piru, Lime Hood Piru, Cross Atlantic Piru, and Hollyhood Piru.

For this reason, Lueders Park is frequently referred to by former members and neighborhood historians as the “motherland” of East Side Piru. Many of the neighborhoods that later emerged throughout East Compton maintained close ties to Lueders Park during their early development, further cementing LPP’s influence on East Side Piru history.

The Kelly Park War

During the mid-1980s, Lueders Park Piru became involved in a violent conflict with the Kelly Park Hustler Crips. The feud escalated following a series of retaliatory killings during late 1985 and early 1986. The violence attracted significant law enforcement attention and became one of the most notorious gang conflicts in East Compton during that era. The rivalry helped define gang politics on the East Side throughout the remainder of the decade.

The Death Row Records Era

Lueders Park Piru gained national attention during the 1990s through its reported association with Death Row Records.

During the 1990s, numerous members and affiliates of Lueders Park Piru reportedly worked security and support roles for Death Row Records alongside members of Mob Piru and Fruit Town Piru. The relationship brought national attention to East Side Piru neighborhoods and linked LPP to one of the most influential eras in hip-hop history.

The neighborhood also became associated with several prominent figures connected to the label. Portions of Tupac Shakur’s “California Love” music video were reportedly filmed within Lueders Park territory, further linking the neighborhood to one of the most recognizable periods in West Coast rap history.

The relationship between Death Row Records and East Side Piru neighborhoods brought increased attention from law enforcement agencies, journalists, and federal investigators throughout the decade.

The Mob Piru Split

For decades, Lueders Park Piru and Mob Piru maintained one of the strongest alliances on Compton’s East Side. Members from both neighborhoods frequently associated with one another and were sometimes collectively referred to as the “Lueders Park Mob.”

That alliance collapsed in 2009 following the killing of a respected Lueders Park member, triggering a violent feud that altered gang politics throughout East Compton. The conflict marked the end of one of the oldest alliances among East Side Piru neighborhoods and remains one of the most significant internal disputes in modern Piru history.

Notable Members and Affiliates

Several individuals associated with Lueders Park Piru have received public attention over the years. Among the most notable is Sylvia “Rambo” Nunn, a longtime affiliate who later appeared on the History Channel’s Gangland episode From Girl to Gangster.

Christopher “Rock B.” Holt gained notoriety following his conviction in the 2005 Butler Avenue double murder case, while Robert Cooper became the subject of a California Supreme Court decision stemming from the 2012 killing of Mob Piru member Nicos Mathis.

Numerous Lueders Park affiliates also reportedly worked security and support positions for Death Row Records during the 1990s.

Documented Incidents

The Kelly Park War (1985–1986)

One of the earliest documented conflicts involving Lueders Park Piru occurred during the mid-1980s when tensions between LPP and the Kelly Park Hustler Crips escalated into a violent neighborhood war.

The feud gained widespread attention following the December 1985 murder of Kelly Park member Charles “Beeb” Stevens. Days later, former Piru member Don Turner was gunned down near Lueders Park in what authorities believed was a retaliatory attack connected to the ongoing conflict.

The violence prompted large-scale police operations in both neighborhoods and remains one of the most significant gang wars in East Compton’s history. The conflict helped cement the rivalry between Kelly Park and Lueders Park for years afterward.

The Butler Avenue Double Murder (2005)

On July 4, 2005, a shooting at a residence on Butler Avenue left two people dead and several others wounded. According to court records, Christopher “Rock B.” Holt and two other gunmen approached a house that investigators identified as a Butler Block Crips hangout located within Lueders Park Piru territory.

The gunmen opened fire on the residence with rifles, killing Mario Gordon and Corey Cartwright while narrowly missing several other occupants. Prosecutors argued the attack was intended to reinforce Lueders Park Piru control over the neighborhood and send a message to rival gang members operating inside their territory. Holt was later convicted and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

The Murder of Jeffrey Shade (2006)

On November 6, 2006, longtime Lueders Park Piru affiliate Jeffrey Shade was shot and killed near the intersection of Rosecrans Avenue and Bradfield Avenue.

According to court testimony, Shade had spent much of the day at Lueders Park before riding his bicycle to a nearby liquor store. He was attacked while returning to the park and died from his injuries.

Although the case did not result in a prosecution of Lueders Park Piru members, the incident remains significant because it demonstrated how closely the gang’s identity remained tied to the streets surrounding Lueders Park decades after the neighborhood’s formation.

The Murder of Nicos Mathis (2012)

On October 24, 2012, Mob Piru member Nicos Mathis was shot and killed at Gonzales Park following a confrontation involving Lueders Park Piru member Robert Cooper. Authorities alleged the killing was connected to the ongoing conflict between the two gangs. Cooper was later convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 75 years to life in prison.

In 2023, the California Supreme Court overturned the gang enhancement attached to the conviction while leaving the murder conviction itself intact. The case remains one of the most significant homicide prosecutions connected to the feud between Lueders Park Piru and Mob Piru.

Operation East Side Piru (2016)

In October 2016, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s investigators conducted a series of search warrants targeting members and associates of both Lueders Park Piru and Mob Piru. The investigation focused on the continuing violence between the two gangs following the collapse of their longtime alliance.

Authorities executed warrants at multiple locations throughout East Compton and recovered firearms, gang evidence, and other items connected to the investigation. The operation demonstrated that years after the original split, law enforcement still considered the Lueders Park Piru–Mob Piru feud one of the most significant sources of gang violence on Compton’s East Side.

Alliances and Rivals

Historically, Lueders Park Piru maintained close relationships with numerous East Side Piru neighborhoods, including Hollyhood Piru, Lime Hood Piru, Cedar Block Piru, and Cross Atlantic Piru. For many years, Mob Piru was considered one of LPP’s closest allies, and members of both neighborhoods frequently associated with one another under what was sometimes referred to as the “Lueders Park Mob.” That relationship deteriorated following the 2009 killing of a respected Lueders Park member, ultimately leading to a violent feud that produced numerous shootings and retaliatory attacks throughout the following years.

Documented rivals include Kelly Park Hustler Crips, Santana Blocc Compton Crips, Neighborhood Compton Crips, Duccy Hood Compton Crips, Compton Varrio 70s, and Compton Varrio Chicano Gang. Among these rivalries, the conflict with Compton Varrio 70s stands out as one of the longest-running disputes involving East Side Piru neighborhoods and has produced numerous shootings and homicides over several decades.
