The Holly Hood Piru (HHP), also known as Holly Hood Bompton Piru, is an African-American Piru street gang located on the East Side of Compton, California. The gang takes its name from South Holly Avenue, a residential street that runs through the center of its neighborhood.

Holly Hood is one of several Piru sets operating in East Compton and is known for its longstanding rivalry with the Ward Lane Compton Crips and its historic alliance with Lime Hood Piru.

History

Holly Hood Piru emerged during the late 1970s and early 1980s as the original East Side Piru neighborhood broke into several smaller sets throughout East Compton. Many of the area’s early Piru members gathered at Lueders Park, which served as a meeting place for the growing East Side Piru sets.

As the area expanded, smaller groups began identifying with their own streets and local sections while still maintaining ties to the P-Funk identity. Holly Hood Piru developed around Holly Avenue and the surrounding residential streets, eventually establishing itself as its own set.

During the gang’s early years, Holly Hood Piru maintained particularly close ties with the neighboring Lime Hood Piru. The alliance between the two groups became known as “Holly Lime,” reflecting the close relationship that existed between the sets during the late 1970s and 1980s.

Older members have said many EastSide Piru sets were much closer during the 1970s and 1980s before later generations became more divided. Family ties were also a major reason many young residents ended up joining Holly Hood, Lime Hood, and other nearby Piru sets.

By the 1990s and 2000s, Holly Hood Piru had become a recognized gang in Los Angeles County and appeared in multiple criminal investigations and court cases involving gang violence.

Territory

Holly Hood Piru claims a section of East Compton centered around South Holly Avenue, the street from which the gang takes its name. Their territory generally stretches from Pannes Avenue to Butler Avenue between Compton Boulevard and Alondra Boulevard.

Holly Avenue and the surrounding residential streets remain the heart of the gang’s territory. Like many East Compton gangs, Holly Hood sits only a few blocks from several rival neighborhoods.

Structure & Identity

Holly Hood Piru functions as a neighborhood-based Piru gang. Members commonly identify with the initials HHP and the name Holly Hood Bompton Piru.

One of the gang’s best-known cliques is the 500 Block, whose members are commonly known as the Block Boys. The clique is based within the Holly Hood area and has long been associated with the gang’s presence in East Compton.

Like many Piru gangs, members commonly identify with the color red, neighborhood graffiti, hand signs, and tattoos associated with their set.

Criminal Activity

Holly Hood Piru has been linked to shootings, homicides, weapons violations, and other offenses associated with gang rivalries in Compton. Court records have repeatedly connected the gang to conflicts involving rival Crip gangs, particularly the Ward Lane Compton Crips.

Documented Incidents

The Ward Lane Feud (2006)

One of the most significant documented conflicts involving Holly Hood Piru occurred during a violent feud with the Ward Lane Compton Crips in 2006. According to court records, investigators alleged that members of Holly Hood Piru were responsible for a shooting that wounded several people associated with Ward Lane, including the girlfriend of a Ward Lane member. Authorities later stated that the shooting triggered a series of retaliatory attacks directed at Holly Hood targets.

The Holly Avenue Retaliation Plot (2006)

During the same investigation, prosecutors alleged that Ward Lane members armed themselves with a rifle and drove into Holly Hood territory searching for a rival gang member. Authorities later recovered weapons that were linked through ballistics evidence to multiple shootings and homicides connected to the ongoing feud.

The Long Beach Murder Case (2011)

In a later appellate case involving a 2011 killing in Long Beach, the victim was identified as a Holly Hood Piru member from Compton. According to testimony introduced at trial, the victim was targeted because of his gang affiliation while living in an area claimed by the Rollin’ 20s Crips.

Allies & Rivals

During the early years of both sets, members commonly referred to the alliance as “Holly Lime.” Older members have described Holly Hood and Lime Hood as one of the closest alliances among the East Compton Piru sets.

Their primary rivals include the Ward Lane Compton Crips, Kelly Park Compton Crips, Atlantic Drive Compton Crips, Neighborhood Compton Crips, Duccy Hood Compton Crips, and South Side Compton Crips.

The gang has also historically clashed with several Compton varrios, including Compton Varrio 70s, Compton Varrio Tokers, Compton Varrio Chicano Gang, Compton Varrio Tortilla Flats, and Compton Varrio Segundo.
